What it is
An IP address identifies a host in a network. There are IPv4 and IPv6, plus private and public ranges.
How it works
Check address type, geo, AS affiliation and WHOIS. Private ranges have no public geo/WHOIS.

GEOIP is approximate and depends on databases. Proxies/VPN may distort detection.
FAQ
- Why is my location off? GeoIP databases map IP addresses to approximate locations based on ISP registration data, not GPS. Accuracy varies from city-level to country-level depending on the provider and region. VPNs and mobile carriers can shift the reported location significantly.
- What is CIDR? CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing) is a compact notation for IP address ranges. For example, 192.168.1.0/24 means all addresses from 192.168.1.0 to 192.168.1.255 - the number after the slash indicates how many bits are fixed in the network prefix.
- What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6? IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (about 4.3 billion total), while IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses (practically unlimited). IPv6 was designed to solve address exhaustion and simplify routing, but both protocols are widely used today.
- What is PTR record? A PTR (pointer) record maps an IP address back to a hostname - the reverse of a regular DNS lookup. It is commonly used to verify mail server identity and to add context in server logs and traceroutes.
